Montreal

Montreal, May 9, 2023 – Notre-Dame-des-Neiges Cemetery will be open for family members of the deceased on Mother's Day, Sunday, May 14, 2023. The entrance, on Côte-des-Neiges Road, will be open for visitors, from 9:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m.

Access to all mausoleums will be possible, but despite the best efforts of our managers since the day after the ice storm to clean and secure the site, several areas of the cemetery will be inaccessible to vehicles and pedestrians to ensure their safety. All visitors are encouraged to verify the location of the site they wish to visit prior to their arrival by consulting the cemetery's website as required. An information and instruction document will be given to all visitors upon arrival at the main entrance on Côte-des-Neiges Road.

Work to clean up and secure the site will resume on Monday, May 15, and the site will be closed to visitors again in the following weeks. Watch a short video: https://youtu.be/c6q1_J0PMzI

According to the forest engineering experts’ report, at least 75% of all the trees in the Cemetery have suffered damage. The most damaged trees are silver maples with trunks larger than 40 cm in diameter, 90% of which have suffered significant damage, particularly to the crown. In addition, many trees have at least one broken or hanging branch larger than 7.5 cm in diameter in their crown. These branches pose a significant threat to the safety of people passing near the affected trees. Moreover, approximately 100 mature trees will need to be felled for safety reasons.

Given these conditions, the Cemetery encourages all visitors to be civic-minded, exercise extreme caution, and observe speed limits and other safety precautions that will be communicated to them at the time of their visit to ensure their safety and that of their loved ones. Information will also be available on May 13, on the cemetery's website, including a disclaimer for physical or property damage associated with the visit.
