Jubilee

The Canadian Conference of Catholic Bishops (CCCB) and the Vatican’s Dicastery for Laity, Family and Life have jointly released important resources for the 5th World Day for Grandparents and the Elderly, celebrated on Sunday, July 27, 2025.

In his message for this special day, Pope Leo XIV invites the Church to recognize elderly people as vital “first witnesses of hope,” calling for a “revolution of care” that honours their role as signs of hope and grace, especially during the Jubilee of 2025: https://www.vatican.va/content/leo-xiv/en/messages/grandparents/documents/20250626-messaggio-nonni-anziani.html

Instituted by Pope Francis in 2021, this annual observance falls near the liturgical Memorial of Saints Joachim and Anne, grandparents of Jesus. It highlights the beauty of intergenerational relationships and the pastoral priority to include seniors in the life of the Church.

The CCCB has now curated a set of resources to support local celebrations, including the newly received Message of the Holy Father, along with a pastoral aid prepared by the Dicastery. The aid features the official prayer for the Day, suggested activities, and pastoral reflections that can be adapted for parishes and families.

To explore these resources and support local participation in this international observance, visit the Canadian Conference of Catholic Bishops and the Dicastery for Laity, Family and Life.

This World Day is an opportunity for all dioceses, parishes, and communities to celebrate the elderly as living signs of hope and to foster meaningful, loving connections across generations.
