Mond’Ami: Renewed Solidarity for Amazonian Children

National
As part of its 2025–2026 Sharing Project, launching this September, Mond’Ami—the Pontifical Missionary Childhood Association in Canada—will provide vital support to the Apostolic Vicariate of Yurimaguas in the Peruvian Amazon. Financial assistance from the project will help transport sick children to the nearest hospitals, whether by river, air, or land, depending on the accessibility of local health posts.
This remote high-Amazon region is home to roughly 16,000 people spread across 6,086 km². The population is largely young, and access to healthcare is extremely limited. River communities and surrounding neighborhoods often lack basic sanitation, resulting in a high prevalence of waterborne diseases.
"The jungle is a wonderful place, inhabited by equally wonderful people, yet they live in conditions of great hardship and vulnerability," says Father Miguel Ángel Marugán, project coordinator on the ground.
"From our conversations with Father Miguel Ángel, we’ve learned that young people in the Peruvian vicariate actively contribute to their families’ survival through fishing and artisanal work," explains Ginette Côté, national coordinator of Mond’Ami.
Mond’Ami is calling on Canadians to support the transportation of children to medical centers. In its previous Sharing Project, the Association helped a religious community in Sri Lanka build an annex for their preschool, expanding access to quality education for more children.
Beyond financial support, Mond’Ami’s campaigns have an educational and spiritual dimension. The missionary association partners with schools and catechetical programs across Canada to raise young people’s awareness of international solidarity.
"Learning, praying, and sharing with children around the world is at the heart of our mission," notes Ms. Côté. "Our projects give young people—especially those preparing for Confirmation—the opportunity to actively participate in a humanitarian initiative and contribute to the Church’s universal spirit of solidarity."
