Montreal's Italian community gathers annually to honour the patron saint of the Abruzzo region
The Annunziata Mission in Lachine hosted the traditional annual feast of Saint Gabriel of Our Lady of Sorrows, a much-anticipated and deeply appreciated occasion for Montreal's Italian community. Organized by the Italian Association San Gabriele, the feast brings together faithful and friends each year to honour the patron saint of the Abruzzo region in an atmosphere of shared faith and authentic fellowship.
Born of a desire to preserve the spiritual and cultural roots of Italians who emigrated to Canada, the feast has become over time a key event for the community: a place where religious tradition mingles with the joy of being together, where generations reunite and bonds are strengthened.
The heart of the day was the solemn Eucharistic celebration, presided over by Fr. Pierangelo Paternieri, C.S., Episcopal Vicar for Cultural and Ritual Communities of the Archdiocese of Montreal. His presence lent the liturgy a profound ecclesial dimension, bearing witness to the Archdiocese's pastoral closeness to the cultural communities that animate the local Church.
The day was marked by a warm and joyful family atmosphere, one where people came together, prayed as one and celebrated all that they share. The feast also welcomed, alongside the faithful, prominent representatives of civic life, a sign of how deeply rooted this tradition is in the social and cultural life of the region.
Julie Pascale Provost, Mayor of Lachine, and Anju Dhillon, Federal Member of Parliament, were received with great warmth by the community: a recognition of the contribution that Italians have made for decades to the cultural and social life of the city of Montreal.
The success of the day is the fruit of the dedicated and generous work of many individuals. Sincere thanks go to all the organizers of the Italian Association San Gabriele, and in particular to the young people who offered their time and help with enthusiasm, ensuring the smooth running of the entire celebration.
It is precisely in moments such as these that the vitality of a community is most visible: in its capacity to pass on the faith, to celebrate its roots, and to do so together, with joy.
