Montreal

The life and legacy of Saint Marguerite Bourgeoys continue to inspire Quebec’s Catholic community, notably the parishioners of Sainte-Marguerite-Bourgeoys on Montreal’s Nuns’ Island. For Fr. Emanuel Zetino, she embodies missionary courage and a deep devotion to God and neighbour.

“For me,” he explains, “Saint Marguerite Bourgeoys is a true source of inspiration. She always sought to go out toward others, to do God’s will in a missionary spirit. From a young age, she desired to bring the Gospel wherever there was need, with a profound commitment to a life of service to others.”

"For me," he reflects, "Saint Marguerite Bourgeoys is a constant source of inspiration. She always sought to reach out to others and to follow God’s will with a missionary spirit. From a young age, she desired to share the Gospel wherever there was need, dedicating her life to serving others."

Patience, Community, and Devotion

Three qualities from her life stand out today: her patience, her commitment to community, and her devotion to Mary.

  • Patience: St. Marguerite waited eight years before opening her first school, all the while actively pursuing her ministry. The construction of the Bon Secours Chapel took 21 years. Fr. Zetino emphasizes the importance of embracing such patience in our own endeavors today.
  • Community: She remained close to those in need, keeping her heart open to all. "Everyone can draw near to God," he reminds us.
  • Mary: The Virgin Mary played a central role in her life, exemplifying trust and openness, as illustrated in the biblical account of Mary visiting her cousin Elizabeth.

Education and Mentorship: A Living Legacy
Fr. Zetino points to St. Marguerite’s commitment to accompaniment in education. She did more than teach—she took genuine care of young people and newcomers, including the Filles du Roi and early settlers.

That same spirit lives on today in initiatives such as Effetá, a formation program for young adults aged 18 to 25 that focuses on giving time to others and fostering mutual support. The parish of Ste-Marguerite-Bourgeoys continues this mission through a catechetical program serving 90 children, as well as youth retreats and other initiatives that engage the next generation.

A Vibrant and Engaged Parish
The parish continues to reflect St. Marguerite Bourgeoys’ missionary zeal. From pilgrimages to the Bon Secours Chapel to community events, it remains a place where God’s presence is felt in every encounter.

Fr. Zetino also notes how the parish adapts to modern realities: blessings for animals on St. Francis’ feast day, the annual distribution of school supplies, and interactive Advent calendars on social media—all initiatives that integrate tradition with an active presence in the everyday lives of parishioners.

A Message of Hope
In closing, Fr. Zetino invites all to place their trust in the Lord, following the example of St. Marguerite Bourgeoys. Despite trials and challenges, she always pressed on, with unwavering trust in the Lord.

“Our plans do not always unfold as we expect,” he recalls, “but they belong to God. We are merely His instruments.”
