Over 300 Adults Gather at the Cathedral to Prepare for Confirmation
Montreal
On Saturday, 8 March, more than 300 adults gathered at Mary, Queen of the World Cathedral for an afternoon with Archbishop Christian Lépine, as they prepare to receive the sacraments of Confirmation or full communion with the Catholic Church. Representing more than 50 parishes across the Archdiocese of Montreal, the group was largely made up of young adults.
They came accompanied by their catechists, godparents, sponsors, and members of their communities, sharing an afternoon that was simple, joyful and marked by a spirit of communion, offering a living portrait of a diverse Church walking together.
The gathering opened with a welcome and friendly icebreaker before turning to the Word of God. The Gospel of the Samaritan Woman at the well was proclaimed, followed by a period of silence inviting each person to sit with one question: what thirst do we bring to the Lord as we prepare to receive the Holy Spirit?
Two personal testimonies of faith preceded the afternoon's most anticipated moment: an open dialogue with Archbishop Lépine. The Archbishop addressed several questions at the heart of Christian life: how to continue deepening one's faith after Confirmation; how to respond to the call to witness even when one does not feel ready; and how each person can live a personal encounter with Jesus in the course of daily life.
The blessing of the crosses followed, with each candidate receiving one as a sign of their journey and their desire to follow Christ. Among the most moving moments of the afternoon was the prayer of the sponsors. Across the cathedral, sponsors and godparents could be seen placing a hand on the shoulder of their candidate and praying quietly over them , a simple gesture, and a powerful reminder that faith is always lived in the company of others.
Archbishop Lépine then gave his blessing to the confirmands and candidates for full communion, entrusting them to the Holy Spirit as they continue their preparation.
Sincere thanks go to the volunteer team of Mission Jeunesse for their support, to the Cathedral staff for their warm welcome and collaboration, and to the musicians led by Élisabeth Vachon, whose prayerful accompaniment sustained the gathering throughout.
We give thanks for these more than 300 adults preparing to receive the Holy Spirit or to enter fully into the communion of the Church in the coming weeks. Their journey is a sign of hope for our Church as we move forward together towards Easter 2026.
