Fire at Saint-Paul Church: Diocesan Update
Montreal
On the early morning of Monday, February 23, 2026, a fire broke out at Saint-Paul Church in Montreal’s Sud-Ouest borough, marking a painful moment for all who are connected to this place of prayer and service. We give thanks that no injuries were reported and express our deep gratitude to the firefighters and emergency responders for their swift action, professionalism, and care.
Representatives of the Diocese were present at the scene on Monday to observe the situation and to meet directly with the Fire Department. We continue to maintain close communication with city authorities and are carefully following all guidance and recommendations as the investigation proceeds.
Saint-Paul Church has been home to an Orthodox community that gathers faithfully for worship in the main sanctuary. In addition, the basement housed a local food bank La main qui partage. Tragically, the fire destroyed all the food bank’s facilities and resources. This loss affects not only the organization but also the many families and individuals who depend on its support. The Diocese holds the volunteers, staff, and recipients of the food bank’s services in our prayers, and we are exploring ways to provide assistance during this difficult time.
We also wish to reassure the broader community that the property has now been secured. A protective fence has been installed, and demolition work required by the Fire Department has been completed. Safety remains our highest priority.
Prior to this incident, efforts had already been made to stabilize and reinforce portions of the building, including the façade, the steeple, and sections of the presbytery. These measures reflected the ongoing care and concern for the site’s structural integrity.
While the full circumstances of the fire remain under investigation, the Diocese remains committed to supporting the community through faith, prayer, and acts of charity. We are grateful for the understanding and solidarity of all who have reached out, and we continue to ask for prayers for everyone affected by this event.
M. Charles Langlois PSS
Vicar General and Moderator of the Curia
