What If Science Revealed God? An Evening of Reflection at the Grand Séminaire de Montréal
Montreal
On February 28, 2026, the Fondation du Grand Séminaire de Montréal hosted a lecture that drew wide interest: “What If Science Revealed God?” Held in person and streamed live on YouTube, the event brought together a diverse audience eager to explore the intersection of contemporary scientific discoveries and the question of God.
Organized in collaboration with the Fondation Lucien-Labelle, the evening was part of their "Dialogues et espérance" (Dialogue and Hope) series—a program of lectures designed to address the pressing questions of our time through the lens of both faith and reason.
The guest speaker, Dr. Nicholas Newman, guided attendees through a thoughtful and accessible intellectual journey. Drawing on insights ranging from the origins of the universe and the formation of planets to the unique conditions of Earth, the intricate complexity of cellular life, mathematics, and human consciousness, he posed a central question: Is the hypothesis of a Creator reasonable?
Dr. Newman argued that modern science does not compel us to exclude God. On the contrary, it reveals patterns, coherence, and depth that invite reflection on the ultimate origin of the universe. Addressing the common perception that science has rendered faith obsolete, he suggested that pure materialism is not inherently a more rational position. Scientific inquiry, rather than silencing the question of God, can often make it more compelling.
In closing, he invited participants to take the reflection one step further: if science points toward the mystery of a Creator, how might we encounter Him? Why does the search for God remain so demanding for many today? He also referenced his book God: The Science, the Evidence, which explores these questions in greater depth: DIEU : LA SCIENCE LES PREUVES : BOLLORÉ,MICHEL-YVES, BONASSIES,OLIVIER: Amazon.ca: Livres
The evening unfolded in a warm and welcoming atmosphere. Attendees were able to tour the Grand Séminaire and engage directly with the speaker, extending the conversation in a spirit of listening and respect. Thanks to the online broadcast, many others were able to follow the lecture from a distance.
