Faith and Light was founded by Marie-Hélène Matthieu and Jean Vanier in 1971. Faith and Light communities are not residences, but places where people living with developmental disabilities, their parents and friends meet regularly, about once a month. They create bonds which deepen through common hopes and difficulties and the sharing of prayer, joyous times, and the eucharist and other celebrations. Friends for Mental Health, West Island, is a bilingual association for families and friends of people with a mental illness. Offers free support group meetings every Thursday from 2:00 – 4:00 p.m. and art therapy workshops for caregivers on Mondays from 3:00 – 5:00 p.m. or 7:00 – 9:00 p.m. They also offer borderline personality disorder training for families and a liaison counselor is available to families in need.
