On October 7, 2009, more than 1,000 people, committed to working in the Church, gathered with me at St. Joseph’s Oratory. This gathering allowed us to reflect on all the work that has been accomplished in the parishes and in other pastoral projects of our diocese since the launch of our diocesan project, Proposing Jesus Christ Today, as the way to freedom and responsibility, in 2003. It also allowed us to consider the next stage of this adventure, five years after it began. One observation came through clearly from this mission experience: there are many fruits when the mission is lived as a team.
The Year for Priests that began last June offers us an opportunity to rediscover the ministry of priests at the heart of the various ministries and charisms exercised in the community. Priestly ministry can only be conceived within a community where each member contributes according to the gifts and charisms with which he or she has been endowed.
In his first letter to the Corinthians (1 Cor. 12, 4-11) — it will be next Sunday’s second reading — Paul observes this amazing variety of gifts and charisms. “To one there is given through the Spirit the message of wisdom, to another the message of knowledge by means of the same Spirit” (v. 8). He continues: faith, healing, discernment, etc. He concludes: “All these are the work of one and the same Spirit” (v. 11). Let’s give thanks to God for such an extraordinary diversity of gifts in the Church.
Teamwork allows for the individual gifts of thousands of people to bear fruit: parish leaders, catechists and their assistants, parents, young people, etc. We are witnesses of what St. Paul proclaims: it is the same Spirit that accomplishes wonders in all of these people and through their actions.
During the October 7 gathering, we launched “Operation Renewal”. The objective is to allow each pastoral entity, whether a parish community or other, to take stock of their activities and to find new ways to propose Jesus Christ to people of all ages. Each group must now ask itself how it reaches out to people of all ages at the various stages of their lives. A great many things are already being done. Then, another question must be answered: “What new and better ways can we envision to reach out to people today? What resources are available in our milieu? With whom can we accomplish our projects? What do we need?”
I am aware of the additional work this exercise requires, however I stress its importance. I hope that in the coming months each pastoral group will take the time to complete this inventory and to look at the perspectives brought to light. May this pastoral experience be inspired by the Spirit who gives to his Church all the gifts it needs so that Jesus Christ can be known to everyone. I wish to thank you all for your dedication. I deeply appreciate it. Let’s all go forward in faith and hope!

ABOUT EASTER AND HOLY WEEK
The following guidelines are intended for the Parish liturgy teams preparing the important celebrations of the Easter Triduum:
On Holy Thursday, no Mass but the Mass of the Lord’s Supper is celebrated, at the most suitable time on the evening of that day;
On Good Friday, no Eucharist is to be celebrated. However, communion, which is our link with the memorial of the Lord’s Last Supper on Thursday and which keeps us in the Hope of the Resurrection is distributed during the celebration of Christ’s Passion;
On Holy Saturday, out of respect for Christ who is buried, the Church does not celebrate any other sacrament but the sacrament of penance and the anointing of the sick in danger of death. For the same reason, communion is distributed to the sick only as viaticum. Prayer assemblies may be held for the Liturgy of Hours;
Easter Vigil, “mother of all Vigils”, when we celebrate the liturgy of the light, must therefore take place after dark, during the night of Saturday.
Furthermore, to underline the mysteries of these days, the Church does not celebrate marriages nor funerals during the Easter Triduum. If a funeral celebration cannot be deferred, Liturgy of the Word and a final Commendation may be held, without Eucharist nor communion.
You may read more about this in the Canonical and Pastoral Guide for Parishes.
Authorizations for parish priests to baptize an adult (14 years up), receive a profession of faith of a person validly baptized outside of the Catholic Church or to confirm a baptized individual during the Easter Vigil, should be requested at the Chancery Office before March 19, 2010.
My best wishes for a joyful preparation!
