Baptism which is the first sacrament we receive, opens the door to all of the other sacraments, and is a sign of: the forgiveness of sins, the gift of new life, complete union with God, Father, Son and Holy Spirit, and a sharing in the death and resurrection of Jesus.

Through Baptism, a person becomes a «Christian» and a member of the Church. There is no special age for Baptism. The Church baptises infants, children, teenagers and adults.

Infants are baptised when their parents or another representative assume the responsibility of assuring that the child will be given the opportunity to discover who Jesus is and to learn his teachings.

School-age children and adults prepare for Baptism by participating in formation which is given through the catechumenate (a word which designates the period of preparation for Baptism).

More detailed information regarding preparation for Baptism is available from your local parish.
